The eight peers fall into four bands around the target, which positions itself as the

measurement/science paper for when multi-agent coordination pays off.

**(A) The architectures 2512 ablates — it does not invent topologies, it standardizes

and prices them.** The target's five canonical architectures (SAS + Independent /

Centralized / Decentralized / Hybrid) are drawn from the exact design space catalogued

by the survey's four communication structures — Layered / Decentralized / Centralized /

Shared Message Pool [2402.01680]. MetaGPT is a concrete

instance of the target's Centralized class: a hierarchical SOP pipeline passing

structured documents rather than free chat, with an executable-feedback verifier

[2308.00352], and the target cites it as the canonical "orchestrator

contains hallucination cascade" case. AutoGen is the framework substrate — its

conversable-agent + auto-reply abstraction is exactly the machinery one would use to

instantiate all five topologies under one roof [2308.08155].

(B) The single-agent pole. The target's thesis rests on SAS being a genuine

contender because it "maximizes context integration" with no coordination tax.

Reflexion is the strongest SAS exemplar here: verbal self-reflection that improves

across trials with no second agent [2303.11366] — and the target

explicitly rules self-reflection out of the MAS definition, making Reflexion the

upper bound on "what one locus of reasoning can do."

(C) The diagnostic predecessors the target quantifies. MAST supplies the error

taxonomy (14 failure modes, 3 categories, o1-judge) that the target's §4.4 error

analysis adopts wholesale [2503.13657]. The survey explicitly

named "scaling laws of multi-agents" as a missing formalization the field owes itself

[2402.01680] — the target is the paper that pays that debt.

(D) The adjacent cost/benchmark surface. SWE-bench is not merely related — it is

benchmark #5 inside the target's own suite; its "localization in a sea of context"

wall [2310.06770] is the mechanism behind the target's capability-ceiling

reading of SWE-bench. Autellix (program-level serving) [2502.13965]

and RouteLLM (strong/weak model routing) [2406.18665] bracket the

economics: the target measures the 3–5× token tax of coordination; these two are the

systems-level answers to paying or avoiding it.

vs MetaGPT — a direct, reconcilable contradiction. MetaGPT reports that adding

roles monotonically improves executability (1 role → 4 roles lifts executability

1.0→4.0) and sets SoTA Pass@1 on HumanEval/MBPP [2308.00352]. The

target's headline is the opposite: once the single-agent baseline exceeds ~45%, adding

agents yields negative returns, and on code-shaped tasks MAS degrades

[2512.08296].

矛盾根源: MetaGPT's monotone gains are measured on static, single-shot code benchmarks (HumanEval/MBPP), where ensemble voting cancels errors; the target measures agentic tasks with sustained environment interaction, where errors cascade through execution chains instead of cancelling [2512.08296]. Both are correct in their own regime — the target's own §2 makes exactly this static-vs-agentic distinction. MetaGPT is not refuted; its result is shown to be non-transferable off the benchmark class it was tuned on.

vs AutoGen — "weak backbones benefit more" vs "high baselines hurt." AutoGen finds

multi-agent helps most on weak backbones (+35% F1 on GPT-3.5 vs +8% on GPT-4)

[2308.08155]. The target finds coordination helps only when the SAS

baseline is low [2512.08296]. These are

the same finding viewed from two axes: a weak backbone produces a low single-agent

baseline, which is precisely where the target's decision boundary says to add agents.

The target thus generalizes AutoGen's qualitative observation into a quantitative

threshold.

vs MAST — qualitative modes → quantified amplification. MAST catalogs verification

failures as one of three categories and shows architecture trades failure classes (SOP

cuts design failures but incurs 1.56× more verification failures)

[2503.13657]. The target operationalizes exactly this into a scalar:

trace-level error amplification of 4.4× (Centralized, has orchestrator verifier) vs 17.2×

(Independent, no verifier) [2512.08296]. The delta is that MAST tells

you which modes exist; the target tells you how much each topology multiplies them.

vs the survey — the survey asked, the target answers. The survey's open challenge

§6.4 asks for scaling laws over #agents and communication rounds and flags per-agent

compute as unquantified [2402.01680]. The target supplies the

regression (Eq. 1, $R^2_{CV}=0.41$), the super-linear turn law $T=2.72(n{+}0.5)^{1.724}$,

and compute-matched per-agent budgeting [2512.08296]. This is the

cleanest predecessor→successor pairing in the cluster.

vs SWE-bench — same wall, deeper reading. SWE-bench isolates localization/long-context

editing (not retrieval) as the bottleneck [2310.06770]. The target

reuses SWE-bench Verified and reads its flat MAS returns as capability saturation —

most models already clear the 45% baseline, so there is no MAS headroom

[2512.08296]. The incremental claim: SWE-bench's difficulty is not a

coordination problem, so coordination cannot help.

vs RouteLLM / Autellix — orthogonal, not competing. RouteLLM routes a query to a

strong/weak model for ~2–3× cost savings with a single call [2406.18665];

the target routes a task to an architecture. Autellix schedules the DAG of calls a MAS

emits [2502.13965]; the target decides whether to emit

that DAG at all. New relative to both: the target gives the a-priori selection rule

the other two assume as input.

Attack 1 — the compute-matched protocol may manufacture the capability ceiling. The

target's load-bearing moat is giving each of $n$ MAS agents a thinner slice of a fixed

global token budget, so "MAS wins can't be bought with compute"

[2512.08296]. But the paper's own §4.4 concedes per-agent reasoning

becomes "prohibitively thin beyond 3–4 agents." That is a confound, not a control: a MAS

agent starved to ~1,600 tokens (4,800/3) may fail from context starvation, not from

coordination structure. MetaGPT and AutoGen deliberately give each role a full budget

[2308.00352] — so the target may be measuring

budget-partitioned MAS, a strictly weaker object than the systems it cites. The

capability-ceiling finding is only as strong as the claim that 4,800/n tokens is "fair."

Attack 2 — the regression is thin and leans on one predictor. $R^2_{CV}=0.373$ leaves

~63% of variance unexplained, and the paper's own robustness pass shows that under

cluster-robust inference ($G=6$) only single_agent_baseline survives at $\alpha=0.05$;

log_tools and efficiency_x_tools inflate to $p>0.17$

[2512.08296]. So the celebrated

"efficiency–tools trade-off" ($\hat\beta=-0.096$) is not independently significant with

six clusters — the 87% architecture-selection accuracy may be mostly "pick SAS when the

baseline is already high," a near-tautology that needs no 20-parameter model.

Attack 3 — the 17.2× is a trace-token metric masquerading as an outcome. The dramatic

error-amplification spread (4.4× vs 17.2×) is trace-level; the paper notes task-level

amplification is only ~1.1–1.3× [2512.08296]. MAST — the taxonomy the

target borrows — measures failures against task completion

[2503.13657]. An Independent MAS that emits 17× more erroneous

intermediate tokens but resolves tasks at a similar rate is not 17× worse to a user; the

headline number overstates the practical stakes.

Attack 4 — naive LangChain MAS vs engineered MAS. The target instantiates topologies

on a LiteLLM+LangChain stack with free-form synthesis

[2512.08296]. MetaGPT's core claim is that *structured schema

hand-offs* (not free chat) are what suppress the cascading hallucination the target

blames on coordination [2308.00352]. If the target's Centralized class

passes prose rather than PRD/interface schemas, its measured error amplification may be

an artifact of under-engineered communication, not an intrinsic coordination tax.

Attack 5 — scope ceiling at 9 agents. The target's turn law and ceilings are fit on

$n\le 9$; the survey documents societies of 1,000–17,945 agents where emergent

specialization is the entire point [2402.01680]. Extrapolating "~157

turns at $n=10$" says nothing about whether qualitatively different regimes appear at

scale — the paper admits this in its own Limitations.

A measurement paper in the deflationary wing of the MAS debate. The target belongs to

the 2024–2026 counter-movement that replaced "more agents are better" optimism with

controlled skepticism. Its natural allies are MAST — "why do MAS fail?"

[2503.13657] — and the Gao-et-al. line it cites; its foils are the

optimism-era framework papers MetaGPT and AutoGen that demonstrated MAS capability

without isolating MAS value [2308.08155]. The field arc is legible:

the survey mapped the design space and named the missing scaling law

[2402.01680]; MAST explained the failures; **2512 is the synthesis step

that turns both into a predictive selection rule**. That is its paradigm slot — not a new

architecture, but the first attempt at a science (falsifiable, quantitative) of

coordination.

Adoption evidence is mixed and reproducibility is its weak flank. On the positive

side: 87% held-out architecture selection, a 94%-match-rate 45% threshold, and

out-of-sample validation on unseen frontier models

[2512.08296] — strong internal evidence the rule generalizes. On the

negative side, and decisive for ecological fitness: the target ships no public code

[2512.08296], whereas nearly every peer it builds on is

open — MetaGPT [2308.00352], AutoGen

[2308.08155], MAST (pip install agentdash)

[2503.13657], SWE-bench

[2310.06770], RouteLLM

[2406.18665]. A selection rule whose fitted coefficients

cannot be re-run is a result to cite, not a tool to deploy; this caps its practical niche

below the frameworks it critiques until the apparatus is released.

5. 未探索方向 #

(1) Architecture routing — fuse the target's regression with RouteLLM's gating. The

target produces a task→architecture decision boundary; RouteLLM produces a query→model

gate learned from preference data [2406.18665]. The unexplored

hybrid is a runtime architecture router that predicts the best topology per task

instance (not per task class) from cheap features — tool count, an early SAS-baseline

probe, estimated decomposability — turning the target's offline 87% rule into an online

policy with RouteLLM-style thresholding.

(2) Price-aware scheduling — feed the coordination tax into Autellix. The target

quantifies per-architecture overhead (Hybrid 515%, Centralized 285%) and the super-linear

turn law [2512.08296]; Autellix schedules agentic DAGs by cumulative

service but is blind to expected coordination cost

[2502.13965]. An unexplored coupling: use the target's

predicted overhead as a prior in ATLAS's program-priority so the scheduler deprioritizes

topologies the model expects to waste tokens — closing the loop between "should we

coordinate" and "how do we serve it."

(3) Schema-contract ablation — settle Attack 4 empirically. Re-run the target's five

topologies twice: once with free-form synthesis, once with MetaGPT-style structured

document hand-offs [2308.00352]. If the 17.2× Independent amplification

collapses under schema contracts, the error-amplification finding is about *message

format*, not topology — a result neither paper currently owns.

(4) Intra-agent verification without an orchestrator. The target shows verification

bottlenecks (orchestrator/debate) cut amplification 17.2×→4.4×

[2512.08296], but every such fix adds a coordination tax. Reflexion's

verbal self-reflection is a single-agent verifier that needs no second locus

[2303.11366]. Embedding a Reflexion-style self-critique inside each

Independent agent is an untested way to buy Centralized-grade error absorption at

Independent-grade overhead.

(5) Residual-driven failure mining. The regression leaves 63% variance unexplained.

Label the target's traces with MAST's o1 judge [2503.13657] and regress

the 14 mode prevalences against the model residuals — the modes that predict where Eq. 1

is wrong would be the next feature set, and would tie the quantitative scaling law back

to MAST's qualitative mechanism.

(6) Un-match the compute budget. The most informative single experiment the target did

not run: sweep per-agent budget as a free variable instead of fixing the global pool

[2512.08296]. Only this disentangles "coordination hurts" from "thin

per-agent context hurts," and would convert Attack 1 from an objection into a measured

coefficient.
